The Falkland Islands Dependencies carried on meteorogical, geological, etc. work in the 50's and 60's (and more) in places like Deception Island and Anvers Island.

Living in the Antarctic in the 1960's meant coal stoves, melting snow for bath water, and running husky dogs. Michael spent two years on the icy continent, one year at Deception Island and one year at Adelaide Island. Ships relieved the isolated bases every eight months. A return in 2005 showed an increase in fur seals and whales, but huskies were no longer allowed to be in the Antarctic.
